Module 1: Introduction to the Indian Flute

  • Overview of the Indian flute as a classical instrument
  • Understanding the different types of Indian flutes (e.g., Bansuri, Venu, etc.)
  • Proper holding and positioning of the flute and fingering techniques

Module 2: Basic Embouchure and Tone Production

  • Learning the correct embouchure for producing a clear and resonant tone
  • Practicing breath control and dynamics while playing the flute
  • Developing a steady airflow for consistent sound production

Module 3: Introduction to Indian Classical Music

  • Understanding the basic concepts of Indian classical music (Raga, Tala, etc.)
  • Introduction to the 12 swaras including 7 suddha swaras, 4 komal, and one teevra swara.
  • Learning to play and recognize the Swaras on the flute.

Module 4: Indian Classical Ragas on Flute

  • Introduction to major Ragas and their characteristics
  • Learning the Arohana (ascending) and Avarohana (descending) of Ragas
  • Practicing Alankars and melodic patterns in Ragas on the flute

Module 5: Talas and Rhythms

  • Understanding the beats and the rhythm with the help of the metronome app.
  • Clapping practices with the metronome.
  • Understanding the concept of Talas (rhythmic cycles) in Indian music
  • Learning common Talas and their variations
  • Practicing rhythm exercises and playing along with Tabla or other percussion instruments

Module 6: Flute Compositions

  • Learning traditional Indian classical compositions (e.g., Bandish, Varnam, etc.)
  • Understanding the structure and theme of the compositions
  • Emphasizing proper phrasing and ornamentation in renditions

Module 7: Indian Songs, Bhajans and Tunes

  • Learning the notations of the songs is the initial stage of playing songs on the flute
  • Secondly trying the techniques on the song to make it more beautiful and harmonious.
  • Thirdly we will see how to use the correct force to produce the sound to give the feel of the song
  • Learning how to read and write the notation of the song
  • Learning how to write the notations of your favorite songs and tunes
  • Learning how to create new music tunes on the flute

Module 8: Improvisation and Alap

  • Understanding the concept of Alap, the slow introductory section of a Raga
  • Learning to improvise and explore Ragas on the flute
  • Developing creativity and spontaneity in improvisations

Module 9: Gamakas and Meend

  •  Exploring Gamakas (ornamentation techniques) on the flute
  •  Introduction to Meend for gliding between notes gracefully
  •  Practicing Gamakas and Meend in various Ragas and compositions

Module 10: Flute Techniques and Expressions

  • Exploring techniques such as Kan and Khatka, Gamak, Murki for articulation
  • Understanding the use of Jhalla for rhythm and embellishments
  • Expressing emotions and feelings through the flute playing

Module 11: Flute Solo Performance

  •  Preparing for solo performances on the flute
  •  Creating captivating solo pieces showcasing the knowledge acquired
  •  Understanding the importance of presentation and stage presence

Module 12: Accompaniment and Collaboration

  •  Exploring the role of the flute in accompanying other instruments and vocalists
  •  Practicing duets and collaborations with other musicians
  •  Developing communication and synchronization skills during accompaniment

Module 13: Conclusion and Student Showcase

  • Reviewing the entire course material and progress made by each student
  • Students perform their chosen flute pieces, compositions, and improvisations in a virtual showcase
  • Evaluation and feedback on individual performances
